Claremorris Web-cam

Graeme Petterwood - 08:06am Mar 18, 2006 Irish

I wonder how many people from around the world watched the 2006 Claremorris St.Patrick's Day Parade. I got the URL from a correspondent in the U.S. and I live in Tasmania, Australia. As far as I was concerned the parade started coming towards the web-cam at 1.00a.m this morning Saturday 18th. and I watched the whole lot as it streamed passed. What it lacked in big-city finesse it certainly made up for it with enthusiasm. The kids were great. I now have had a chance to see the photos on this site and I honestly felt as if I watched it from the upstairs window. Thank you!

Over the last few days I have watched the trees outside your window as they throw off winter and become green with life again. I have seen your streets glistening with rain in the middle of the night and the greyness of early morning clouds to the north and could nearly smell the freshness in the air - all as shown by the Web-cam. Thanks!

Love the webcam. Saw my friends on there last night. What a hoot.

Hope you can go to streaming cam some time soon.

Thanks so much.

We were in Claremorris in 2000 and again in 2003 visiting family. I enjoy looking down the street and the all the pleasant memories that come rushing back. Where is it located and how far is it from the Town Square? Jim from Hainesport New Jersey USA

Graeme Petterwood - 03:13am May 12, 2006 Irish (#8 of 179)

Hi Jim, You can actually work it out from the town map which is on the site pages showing the businesses street by street.

Here's a handy site if you are abroad or an ex-patriate. It's called the World Clock.

I managed to get this site address into our local city newspaper two days ago. I was impressed by the Claremorris businesses' appearances and, as our city (the 3rd. oldest in Australia) is debating whether to completely ban sidewalk advertising (sandwich boards), I refered them to see what could be done if a bit of sensible compromise could be applied in our case and in certain heritage areas.

Oh why, Oh why,is your camera located at the very end of the town. why not include the heart of the town, with the great church steeple in the background.

Jim

Our camera is located at the end of town because that is where our office is! I think the view of the lovely budding trees on James St is wonderful at the moment .... don't you??

Angharod Brown-Bair - 08:54pm Jun 2, 2006 Irish (#15 of 179)

I don't believe I've been to Claremorris, other than perhaps passing through on a bus to somewhere; I do enjoy the webcam for consistancy compared to some others. Looks like a lovely town. The only thing I would even suggest is that the camera be aimed a wee bit higher to catch more of the sky. It's wonderful to see the sun rise and set in Ireland, and of course seeing the trees wake up and dress for summer is always special.

Good job keeping us abreast of Irish days/nights.

Great idea! We come to Ballina every year, and have passed through Claremorris. Next year, I'll have to see if I can find the camera!

B.C. - 12:59am Jun 21, 2006 Irish (#17 of 179)

I live in Claremorris and think this web cam is brill! However I have a brother home from England at the moment that found this quite by acident on his computer, he recomends you point it approx one or two inches higher and you would get a better veiw of higher up the town? Maybe worth a try??

He is now always logged on waiting to see one of us! As I expect are all living away from home, we all know what that's like!!

Keep it up and keep Claremorris on the "world map"

A very apreciative viewer.

Hi B.C. - Perhaps those in Claremorris, who really care to, might possibly prearrange with MI for a 'viewing time' with their o/seas rellies over a quiet weekend - with appropriate posters, of course......... just a thought. Current MI staff might also like to give us a wave one day as well......

My father's mother (Margaret Jane Foy/McCue) came from just outside Claremorris. She was the oldest of the 8 Foy sisters and the 2 Foy brothers. She arrived in 1895 and the family went to a little town in Kansas. The cemetary in the town (Vine Creek, Kansas) is all that is left. The names on the tombstones are, mostly, from the Claremorris area. Great family stories. Jack

I just did a google search for Claremorris and it came back with the webcam link, great stuff!! Although a bit quiet right now, early saturday morning, not a lot of people in the street. I would love to see my friends there, I reckon you should put another webcam around the coffee shop or the toyshop, I would see plenty of friendly faces! We used to live in Claremorris (Knockatober, a mile from Ballinsmalla graveyard) before moving to New Zealand in Nov 2005, and I still miss the place! So yes, I am very happy to have found the webcam, I will show it to the kids, see if they can remember. Thanks, Laura

Was given this site by another Irish website. Love the view of the village, wish they'd paint the houses here in Maine, USA those colors. It's so cheerful.

I made mention in a previous message of the 'World Clock' - to enable viewers to work out time differences if they wish to. However, is it feasible and technologically possible to insert a 24 hour digital timepiece somewhere on the Web-Cam site showing local time? It would save some people (ignoramuses like me) a lot of extra hassles in converting the times - when all we want to do is watch the web-cam at a suitable time to see something in daylight..

sysop - 04:31pm Nov 7, 2006 Irish (#28 of 179)

Hi Graeme!

In response to that request (and seeing as it's yourself!!) we have added a clock to the web-cam page. You can now gaze at the changing face and weather in Claremorris and be aware of what time it is here. Incidentally, you will soon be able to view our town Christmas lights - you can see that the fittings for them are already up (in front of web-cam).

Graeme Petterwood - 10:58am Nov 8, 2006 Irish (#29 of 179)

That's great! Thank you - I'm sure that many other viewers will also welcome the Claremorris Cam Clock. I'm looking forward to the Christmas decorations....... Where did the year go to?

Graeme Petterwood - 12:53am Nov 9, 2006 Irish (#30 of 179)

The Claremorris time being 11 hours behind Australian Eastern Time now daylight saving has commenced means I will probably be spending a bit more of my evening in front of my computer instead of the TV (not missing much these days) I'm even starting to recognise certain cars in the street - and I have the great Business houses photo-tour to tell me what is all around your offices. I would love to walk down the streets there. Do you advertise your site 'locally' or is it mainly aimed at the outside world? Do you have a 'hit' counter so that you can estimate the effectiveness of the site? Well, I like it!!!

martine allen - 09:35pm Nov 17, 2006 Irish (#31 of 179)

Hello to all in Claremorris,

We were visiting the town last week and we text our children in Birmingham UK to put on the webcam so we could wave to them......... FANTASTIC TECHNOLOGY

Looking forward to spending Christmas in Claremorris.

It is interesting to see that car-parking in Ireland is allowed to face in either direction. In most towns and cities in Australia we can only park on the same side as we are driving (we also drive on the left-hand side of the road with our car steering-wheel on the right)and we must park also facing in that direction by law. Only in far outback country towns are those 'city laws' unofficially relaxed. Angle parking is drive-in, back out and drive forward on the l.h. side without crossing the traffic or u-turning .

Graeme Petterwood - 01:51am Dec 3, 2006 Irish (#34 of 179)

Hello Gang, Some of your light bulbs appear to be out! Hope you are enjoying the wet weather - send some our way in Tasmania. Imagine Ireland without green - that's how it's getting here in places at the moment.
